Lagos State Government locked up Some Churches, Mosques and Hotels over Noise pollution
The management of the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), has shut down 70 churches and 20 mosques in the state over noise pollution. Bola Shani, the general manager of the agency made this known in an interview with newsmen in Lagos today June 29th.
He said that “Precisely about 70 churches, 20 mosques and about 11 hotels, club houses and
beer parlours were shut and we’ve given them some directives to follow. We’ve
been so strict now that we are not going to even allow make-shift churches in
the state any longer. What I mean by make-shift, using tents and uncompleted
building, we are not going to allow that any further in the state.
But I will strongly tell you that the level of compliance is more on the mosque
area, because immediately you shut them, they instantly bring down their
speakers or reduce the noise they make.’’ Shabi says the plan of the state
government is to reduce noise pollution in the state to about zero per cent by
the year 2020. “As at today, we are only able to reduce the noise level to about
35 per cent. That is not a pass mark yet. So, until we reach that target of 70 to
80 per cent, we will continue the enforcement. Enforcement is a continuous
exercise and we have set a target for ourselves. We want to ensure that Lagos is
noise-free by the year 2020. With our status as a mega city, by year 2020 we
will be free of noise,’’ .

Former Foreign Affairs Minister, Ojo Madueke is Dead.
An Ex-Minister of Foreign Affairs, Chief Ojo Maduekwe, is dead. He died at his Ministers’ Estate residence, Abuja on Wednesday evening.
The cause of his death was however unknown, but the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party, Walid Jibril, confirmed his death.
Until his death, Maduekwe was the secretary of the PDP BoT.
Sources close to him said he had a health challenge on his way back to Nigeria from the United States of America.
Jibril, in an emotion-laden voice, told our correspondent that the death of his secretary came to him as a rude shock.
He said he got the news from Saudi Arabia, where he is currently observing the Lesser Hajj.
Jibril, who alongside Maduekwe and other members of the Board of the PDP took over the running of the party following the crisis that engulfed the PDP after its national convention in Port Harcourt on May 21, said the party had lost a loyal member.
He said, “He was a worthy man; a very dedicated member of the party, who operated with an open mind. He was a very resourceful man, a dependable ally who tried his best for the country, his party, his family and everyone around him.
“It is a great loss to the nation, the PDP and his family. He was a national secretary of our party, a former ambassador. In fact, I have lost a friend and a loyal party man.
“He was one of the best secretaries of the party and a great manager of men. It will be very difficult to have someone like him. “
Also, a former Minister of Transportation, Chief Ebenezer Babatope, said he received the news of Maduekwe’s death with shock.
He said it was difficult for him to believe that his colleague in the BoT had died, saying that “he was a nice man. He was very intellectual in all his ways.
“He was a plain person, he had no animosity towards anyone. We spoke about three weeks ago and I never knew that we were speaking for the last time. “
While serving as the minister of transportation, Maduekwe popularised the use of bicycle as a means of transportation. This made people to refer to him as “Ojo oni keke,” which means Ojo, the bicycle man.
Born on May 6, 1945 in Abia State, the deceased was appointed Foreign Affairs Minister on July 26, 2007 by the late President Umaru Yar’Adua.
He died at the age of 71 years.

FG - We won’t Force anybody on land for Ranch Development
Federal Government has said it will neither force people to surrender land nor seize anybody’s land for ranch development in Nigeria.
The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh, disclose this when he received a delegation from Oyo state government, led by the Special Adviser on Projects to the Oyo State Governor, Mrs. Tolu Shadipe, a statement by the ministry on Sunday night said.
According to the government, about 6,000 applicants have indicated interest in cattle breeding improvement programmes in Nigeria
The Federal Government said it would continue to work with state governments with respect to getting land for the development of ranches across the country.
There have been protests about reported plans by the government to establish grazing reserves in the country.
For instance, last week, a group of youths in Plateau State took to the streets to protest against the reported inclusion of the state among those that had agreed to contribute lands for the purpose of establishing grazing reserves.
But Ogbeh was quoted as saying, “The Federal Government is not going to seize anybody’s land or force people to surrender land for ranches.”
He pledged support for Oyo State in its bid to optimally develop its agricultural potentials and encouraged the state to leverage on the abundant rainfall in the region to develop ranches for cattle breeding improvement programme.
He added, “I think ranching is something that can be controlled and it is something that can be carried out in Oyo State by farmers who want to do so, and for that we can give some support.”
Ogbeh further added that the Federal Government would collaborate with state governments to expand the country’s irrigation systems.
Kano and Oyo states has the highest number of dams, as both states had 23 and 22 dams respectively.

“I congratulate all the awardees for their meritorious service to the state. I wish you good health and great years ahead as you look forward to a glorious end of your careers in the public service.”

ISIS targeting children through mobile app, FG warns
Islamic State of Iraq and Syria has developed and launched a new mobile application aimed at recruiting and indoctrinating children for the purpose of furthering its Jihad course.
A statement issued by Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, in Abuja on Thursday said the mobile application, tagged ‘Huroof’ (Arabic alphabets or letters), is to be used by ISIS to teach children the Arabic alphabets with the aid of guns, military tanks and cannons.
Mohammed said, “The application utilises colourful illustrations that attract and engage the attention of young children.”
The minister urged members of the public and parents in particular to be vigilant and to prevent their children and wards from being indoctrinated
The Federal Government had in 2014 issued a security alert that the ISIS had employed the services of a South African to recruit fighters for it from West Africa.
Shortly after the warning, a son of a prominent former Chief Justice of Nigeria was reported to have travelled to Syria in company with his two wives to fight for ISIS. The man was reportedly killed in Syria recently.

A Boeing 777 plane was forced to make an emergency landing en route from Jeddah, in Saudi Arabia, to New York's JFK airport when it was forced to divert to London, yesterday, June 15, when a woman went into labour.
The pilots of the Saudi Arabian Airlines plane declared an emergency while flying over Northern Ireland, the Mail Online reported.

Factional chairman of PDP, Ali Modu Sheriff, has reportedly agreed to refund N40 million which he allegedly got from the N24.29 billion PDP campaign fund that was allegedly disbursed by former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke during the 2015 general election.
Sheriff was invited to the EFCC zonal office in Maiduguri, Borno state yesterday June 15th where he was grilled for over 7 hours on how the campaign funds for the party in the 2015 general election was sourced and disbursed.
After much questioning, Sheriff signed an undertaken to return N40 million and was granted administrative bail. A source at the antigraft agency who spoke to The Nation said “Based on previous interactions with some leaders of the PDP in Borno State, we isolated issues for him and asked him to respond to the allegation that he benefitted from the N450million allocated to the state by Diezani as campaign funds. One of the issues was the N40million traced to him through Hon. Kumalia for security. Sheriff admitted receiving the cash and made a firm commitment to return it as soon as possible. Based on Sheriff’s pledge, he was granted an administrative bail.”
On June 6th, EFCC questioned the Borno state PDP Campaign coordinator who stated that the state got N450million and that the sum of N40m was given to Hon. Kumalia for onward transmission to Ali Modu Sheriff for Security.

Buhari Says We’ll soon put smile on Nigerians’ faces
President Muhammadu Buhari
President Muhammadu Buhari has re#FGassured Nigerians that his administration will soon put smiles on their faces by rehabilitating the economy and creating more jobs.
The President said this in his address delivered at the swearing-in ceremony of the 2016 Batch ‘A’ stream II at the National Youth Service Corps permanent orientation camp, Ede in Osun State on Wednesday.
The address was read by the state Deputy Governor, Mrs. Titi Laoye-Tomori.
He said the collapse of industries had worsened the unemployment rate because millions of unemployed youths were now struggling to get very limited government jobs.
Buhari, who lamented the poor state of the economy inherited by his administration, said he was bent on recovering the nation’s stolen wealth and used them to rebuild the economy.
He said, “The collapse of industries and the eventual overbearing pressure to grab public jobs has put the nation in a sorry economic state of unemployment. Thousands of graduates from the higher institutions of learning get frustrated daily, as they search for non-existing jobs.
“That is why this administration is anxious to recover illicit wealth to channel them into enduring economic rehabilitation. Very soon, the gloomy situation would be reversed to put smiles on the faces of young people.”
The President advised the youths to shun kidnapping, drug peddling and other criminal activities which could jeopardise their future.
The Coordinator of the NYSC in Osun State, Mrs. Regina Iluebbey, said the scheme had adjusted its cooking arrangements to cater for Muslim corpers, during the Ramadan.
She said the scheme would start preparing saur and Iftar for Muslim corps members for them to participate in the Ramadan.
She said, “The camp kitchen would double its efforts in ensuring that the corps members participating in the ongoing Ramadan are served at saur (midnight) and Iftar (evening) time throughout their stay in camp.”
She added that the NYSC reduced the usual 21 days orientation camp to 17 days due to the large number of students who graduate annually, adding that the cut in days was important in order to cover the salient orientation camp exercises.
Iluebbey added that the camp registered 1,416 male corps members and 799 female corpers from the 36 of the federation, including the Federal Capital Territory.
Also, the Niger State Governor, Abubakar Bello, on Wednesday said there was no wisdom in scrapping the NYSC since the primary objective of the programme was still relevant in the nation.
Bello, who said that the NYSC was still relevant as a vehicle for national unity, asked the Federal Government to reinvigorate the scheme rather than scrap it.
The governor said this at the formal opening ceremony of the 2016 Batch ‘A’ (Stream Two) orientation course and swearing-in ceremony of 2,001 corps members deployed in the state.
The governor, however, said in the NYSC implementation processes, “we need to be more innovative and we need to reinvigorate the programme by giving the youths the opportunity to learn higher ideals and prepare them for the reality of life after death.”
Earlier, the NYSC Niger State Coordinator, Mrs. Bolade Loto, said that a total of 2,001 corps members were registered in the Stream B, adding that they had so far exhibited high level of discipline, commitment and loyalty since they arrived the camp.
In Owerri, the Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, advised corps members posted to the state to ensure active participation in the empowerment programme so as to enable them to stand on their own as entrepreneurs instead of job seekers after the completion of their service year.
Okorocha gave the advice while declaring open, the 2016 Batch “A” (Stream 11) 1,800 corps members posted to the state after the State Chief Judge, Justice Paschal Nnadi represented by Justice Kenneth O. Ojiako of the state judiciary administered the oath on the corpers.
He said, “The NYSC orientation programme provides a veritable platform for you to be trained mentally and physically and this is done to enable you to face the rigours and challenges of the service year as well as the post-service year.”
Okorocha, who was represented by his deputy, Prince Eze Madumere, restated his determination to make the NYSC Permanent Orientation camp at Eziama Obaire, the best in the country.
He also announced the immediate restoration of regular supply of water, electricity and functional vehicles in the orientation camp for the comfort of the corps members and enhancement of the operation of the NYSC officials in the state.
The state Coordinator of the NYSC, Mr. Fasanu Isaac, had earlier commended Okorocha for his sustained support to the scheme as well as his resolution to make the orientation camp second to none in the country
NLC threatens strike over sacked bank Employees
President of the NLC, Mr. Ayuba Wabba
The Nigeria Labour Congress has given a 14- day ultimatum to six banks to recall all sacked workers or face a nationwide industrial action.
The NLC said in a letter to the management of the six banks, signed by the Deputy General Secretary, Mr. Chris Uyot, on behalf of the President, Mr. Ayuba Wabba, that the congress decided to issue the ultimatum having been informed by the National Union of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions Employees that the banks embarked on arbitrary mass sacking of workers without adherence to labour laws.
The banks are Fidelity Bank, Diamond Bank, First City Monument Bank, First Bank, Ecobank and Skye Bank.
The NLC also accused the management of the affected banks of preventing unionisation of workers in spite of efforts to resolve the issue amicably.
Uyot said that the NLC would ensure the closure of all branches of the banks across the country if all sacked workers were not recalled and workers allowed to unionise at the expiration of the ultimatum expected to take effect from June 16, 2016.
“I have been directed to notify you that we have been informed by our affiliate union, the National Union of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions Employees that your bank has arbitrarily sacked a large number of workers contrary to laid down procedures and the country’s extant labour laws.
“In addition, you have also resisted unionisation of workers in your bank despite spirited efforts by the union to amicably engage you in the process.
“By this letter, we are giving your bank 14-day ultimatum commencing from Thursday, 16th June, 2016 to immediately recall all workers so sacked and allow unionisation of workers in the bank or face industrial action, which may include closure of your banks and all its outlets nationwide.

Malnutrition and African Children
Nearly two in five children in Africa – 60 million in total – are chronically malnourished It would cost little more than $10 billion per year to protect
90 per cent of the world’s most vulnerable children from
hunger.
Chronic malnutrition fails to capture headlines, but is no less
devastating for that, says Stefan Simanowitz .
‘When you arrive in a village, everything may seem normal at first but
then you start to notice things,’ explains Assumpta Ndumi. ‘It is
lunchtime but there is no food on the fire. There are children in the
village but no laughter or play. These are some of the signs of chronic
malnutrition.’ For Assumpta, Save the Children’s nutrition adviser for
East Africa, chronic malnutrition is a problem every bit as serious as
acute malnutrition, even if it seldom captures the headlines. ‘In Kenya
last year, the acute malnutrition that followed the drought was widely
reported, but even before the rains failed there was a hidden hunger
and children were dying because of it,’ she explains.
Assumpta has witnessed firsthand the situation faced by children in
Ethiopia, South Sudan, Darfur and Kenya. ‘Many families eat just one
meal day, but it is often the quality rather than the quantity of the
food that they eat that leaves them dangerously weak,’ she says,
pointing to reliance on staples such as maize and cassava, which have
low nutritional value, as well as the lack of fresh fruit and vegetables.
But she has also seen how simple, low-cost interventions can have a
significant positive impact, transforming lives and preventing
unnecessary deaths. According to A Life Free From Hunger , a new
report by Save the Children, nearly two in five children in Africa – 60
million in total – are chronically malnourished. The report argues that
malnutrition is the underlying cause of one third of child deaths
worldwide, although it may not appear on their death certificates.
Secondary illnesses such as diarrhoea, pneumonia and malaria, rather
than chronic hunger, are usually put down as the cause of death.
Pressing concerns
As well as causing fatalities, chronic malnutrition is having a
devastating impact on children’s development. Without the necessary
protein, vitamins and minerals, children’s bodies and brains do not
develop properly. In Niger, for example, recent World Health
Organization research shows the average two-and-a-half-year-old will
be more than 8 centimetres shorter than a well-nourished child, and a
2011 UNICEF study found that one in three children in Zimbabwe
suffers from chronic malnutrition.
Malnourished children
often suffer from
diminished IQs, and if they
survive to adulthood are more likely to suffer from heart disease,
diabetes and renal damage as well as being far less productive
members of society.
Despite a significant global reduction in child deaths, progress on
tackling chronic malnutrition has been painfully slow. While over the
past 20 years the number of deaths from tuberculosis fell 40 per cent
globally and deaths from malaria fell by over 30 per cent in Africa,
levels of stunting across the continent have dropped by just 1 per cent
over the same period. There are now growing fears that a
combination of trends – including rising food prices, climate change
and demographic shifts – could reverse even this modest gain.
In a recent survey, also by Save the Children, half of families polled in
Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru, India and Bangladesh said they were forced to
cut back on food last year. The poll also found that 1 in 6 parents
asked their children to skip school in order to work to help pay for
the families’ food. In Nigeria, a quarter of all parents surveyed said
their children sometimes or often go without food for an entire day,
and 94 per cent pointed to rising food prices as their most
pressing concern.
According to Assumpta, tackling chronic malnutrition is neither
difficult nor expensive. ‘I have seen how encouraging breastfeeding
and fortifying basic foods with essential minerals or vitamins can have
an immediate and dramatic impact on children’s health,’ she says.
Back in 2008, the Lancet medical journal identified an affordable
package of 13 direct interventions – including vitamin A and zinc
supplements, iodized salt, and the promotion of healthy behaviour
such as breastfeeding – that were proven to have an impact on the
nutrition and health of children and mothers. It is estimated that it
would cost little more than $10 billion per year to implement this
package and help protect 90 per cent of the world’s most vulnerable
children from hunger.

France Whip Albania,Qualify for Round 16,Euro 2016
Dmitri Payet
The tournament hosts France, who are among the favorites needed a late stunner from ato clinch all three points in their first game against Romania.
They left it late in the second half of the game to defeat an Albanian side they were widely expected to defeat comfortably.
Two quick goals in the dying minutes of the game from Antoine Griezman and man of the moment, Dmitri Payet saved the hosts from an embarrassing stalemate.
The victory confirmed their qualification to the next stage but performances like these
against much weaker opposition has led observers to question France's title credentials.
JTF captures 17 B’Haram Sect members in Borno
Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Col. Sani Usman
Members of the Civilian JTF have captured 17 members of the Boko Haram sect in Borno State.
The Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Col. Sani Usman, said on Wednesday that the 17 insurgents were among several others apprehended by members of the Civilian JTF.
He said the insurgents who were apprehended along Njaba Road, South of Damboa, by a Civilian JTF patrol team, led by Sarkin Yaki Gwoza, confessed that they were compelled against their will to join the deadly group.
Usman said that further screening carried out by the military, however, revealed that 17 of them were hardened members of the Boko Haram who were trying to infiltrate the society.
Usman also added that the insurgents had attacked Kutuva village. He said they killed four persons and abducted four women prior to the arrest of the 17.
He said that members of the vigilante group mobilised and moved against the terrorists, who attacked the village on six motorcycles and destroyed their camp.
Usman also revealed that the vigilante had not been able to trace the attackers or the abducted women but were able to rescue an 11-year-old girl, who was abducted by the Boko Haram from Barth village.
According to him, the vigilantes also “recovered all hoisted Boko Haram terrorists’ flags, three Fabrique Nationale rifle magazines, two AK-45 rifle magazines and 24 rounds of 7.62mm (NATO) ammunition.”
The acting army spokesman added that a combined patrol team of 7 Division Garrison, 101 Special Forces Battalion and three Civilian JTF, intercepted and recovered a golf car which was suspected to have been carrying logistics for the insurgents, along Kayamla General, on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the Acting Federal Commissioner, National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons, Mrs. Margaret Essien, has said that the Federal Government will support every effort targeted at re-integrating Internally Displaced Persons.
Essien, who made this known in Abuja during an event to commemorate the World Refugee Day, said that government would ensure that IDPs engaged in meaningful skills acquisition programmes.
According to her, promoting peace, stability and human rights around the world is very crucial at this time so that the displaced population can someday, return to their homes in safety and dignity.

UEFA hands Russia Suspended Disqualification From Euro 2016
UEFA have given Russia a suspended disqualification from Euro 2016 - meaning that if there is any more violence in stadia during the tournament, they will be out of the competition.
The judgement is careful to point out that the disqualification will only apply if there is trouble inside grounds - not outside in the streets.
The UEFA executive committee has already said that they will consider expelling Russia,
however, should there be any violence outside stadia.
The Russian FA have also been given a fine of 150,000 euros.
They were charged in relation to offences of crowd disturbances, use of fireworks and
racist behaviour inside the Stade Velodrome on Saturday, and UEFA's control, controllers and disciplinary body met in Paris to consider the case.
Russian sports minister Vitaly Mutko said "The punishment is excessive, but we cannot influence it. The fine is enormous as the Russian Football Union is a non-commercial organisation. There is no sense in appealing,"
Ali Modu Sheriff was contracted by APC to cause chaos –PDP panel
Ali Modu Sheriff was contracted by APC to cause chaos –PDP panel
Ali Modu Sheriff
the Senator Ahmed Makarfi-led National Caretaker Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party on Tuesday alleged that the sacked acting national chairman of the party, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, was acting a script written for him by the ruling All Progressives Congress.
The Publicity Secretary of the committee, Dayo Adeyeye, said this at a press conference addressed by five out of the seven members of the committee in Abuja.
The committee described Sheriff’s “takeover” of the party secretariat as a brazen act of lawlessness and an attempt to set the stage for a violent confrontation.
The ousted acting national chairman, Sheriff, currently leads a faction of the party, which also includes a few members of the sacked National Working Committee, while Makarfi, who enjoys the support of the PDP governors and the Board of Trustees, leads another faction.
The PDP had, until last month, split into three factions with one of the factions led by Senator Ibrahim Mantu; the second consisted of governors, while the third was headed by Sheriff.
The governors and other stakeholders had, on May 21, converged on Port Harcourt for the party’s national convention, where a caretaker committee, headed by Makarfi, was constituted.
The Mantu group, which held a separate meeting in Abuja on the day the Port Harcourt convention held, later on June 7, endorsed the Makarfi committee.
But the Sheriff faction described the caretaker committee as illegal, saying it had no place in the PDP constitution.
Adeyeye alleged that Sheriff, in company with the former National Secretary, Prof. Olawale Oladipo, and former National Auditor, Alhaji Fatai Adeyanju, invaded the secretariat with three lorry loads of thugs and bandits as early as 6am on Monday.
According to him, when rumour of the planned invasion filtered out on Sunday, members of the committee took steps to alert the police to secure the building and to protect the lives and property of members.
He added, “Up to a point, the police discharged their responsibilities satisfactorily. However, later on, without any justification whatsoever, Ali Modu Sheriff and the other renegades were allowed to gain entry into the secretariat, where they later proceeded to address a press conference.’’
He stressed that it was curious that the police claimed to be acting on “orders from above” in allowing Sheriff and his cohorts to gain entry into the secretariat.
Adeyeye said, “The All Progressives Congress has contracted Sheriff and his cohorts to scuttle the chances of the PDP in the Edo governorship election.
“We have credible intelligence that Sheriff had a meeting on Sunday night with an (unnamed) APC governor from the North-West, where it was organised that he would be given full security and financial support to exacerbate the crisis in the PDP with the objective of preventing the PDP from presenting a candidate for the Edo governorship election, or in the very least, to prevent the PDP from offering a serious challenge to the APC, whose electoral fortunes have continued to nosedive.”
In his reaction, however, Sheriff’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Inuwa Bwala, said, “Senator Ali Sheriff is too big to be used by anybody, least of all the APC, to destroy a party he is trying to and weaning from the milk of impunity and rebuilding to give Nigerians a credible alternative.
“He left the APC based on principle and has not had contact with the party ever since. The so-called caretaker committee knows that INEC will not accept any list from it; so, it is desperate to get recognition.
“We know for certain that the leader of that group has a presidential ambition and he appears to have recruited some governors, who are now backing him to use the PDP platform, knowing that Ali Sheriff is a stickler for the right things being done; he sees him as an obstacle that must be removed.”
The Makarfi-led caretaker committee, however, assured the Edo people that the party was doing everything to ensure that the PDP platform was not hijacked by political merchants.
The committee said the process for the primary of the PDP governorship candidate for the state started on Monday with ward congresses.
The committee alleged that Sheriff and his backers had continued their attempt to buy any court order at any price, adding that the embattled ex-acting party boss had not succeeded because of the vigilance and integrity of the judiciary.
Adeyeye said Sheriff was appointed, not elected by the National Executive Committee of the PDP to complete the tenure of Alhaji Adamu Ma’uzu.
He said the appointment of the caretaker committee was in line with the PDP constitution and its extant laws.
“We also wonder who he would be chairman over when he (Sheriff) has already been rejected by 99.99% of the party,” Adeyeye said.
A member of the committee, Senator Abdul Ningi, also told journalists that he suspected the involvement of the government in the crisis.
He alleged that the high level of security around Sheriff left no one in doubt on the support of the government for Sheriff.
Attempts to get an official reaction from the APC were futile.
Repeated telephone calls to the National Chairman of the APC, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, were not returned.
A response to a text message, sent to him for the party’s reaction to the PDP’s allegations, was still being awaited as of the time of filing this report.
Meanwhile, Sheriff was sighted going into the Chairman’s office at the party’s national secretariat on Tuesday.
He arrived at the secretariat at about 10am.
In the meantime, Makarfi has described claims that he has pledged allegiance to Sheriff as fraudulent.
Makarfi was reacting to news reports in which he was quoted as having told Sheriff that he(Makarfi) accepted the position of the caretaker committee chairman of the party in error.
The former Kaduna State governor while speaking with newsmen in Abuja, expressed disappointment with the various court orders being displayed by some party members, adding that no court stopped the party’s national convention held in Port Harcourt.
Makarfi said, “That’s very fraudulent. I saw him (Sheriff) at the (Port Harcourt) convention of course, but I haven’t sat privately with Modu Sheriff in the last three months, or anybody representing him, not to talk of me making such a statement.
“I haven’t granted any press statement. If that is the case, how can it be that the only statement I would make is to apologise to him and express support for him?
“There is no basis for that, absolutely no basis for that.
“The court never stopped any convention. Of course, it said ‘do not elect’ and we didn’t elect.
“And the order, which was said to have been vacated and that’s the Port Harcourt court order, hasn’t been vacated and the Inspector-General Police and Independent National Electoral Commission till today said it is an existing order
EFCC raids Obanikoro’s homes in Lagos .

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) today Tuesday
June 14th stormed the Lagos residences of former Minister of State for Defence,
Musiliu Obanikoro, taking away cars and other valuables.
The two homes raided were the former minister’s private residence at Park View Estate in Ikoyi and the house near Banana Island, also in Ikoyi where his two sons, Jide and Gbolahan live with their families.
The antigraft agents took along with them vehicles, wristwatches and other personal effects of the former minister and his sons, who are all in the United States.
Obanikoro’s media aide, Jonathan Eze, released a statement detailing what transpired.
The statement reads
“Officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Tuesday in
their characteristic Gestapo like manner invaded Senator Obanikoro’s houses in
Ikoyi with unnecessary intimidation and harassment of occupants who are
majorly innocent kids, teenagers, his wife and daughter in-laws not without
carting away cars, wristwatches and other valuables. This is against the
backdrop of the fact that the anti- graft agency has never invited him nor his
sons for questioning beyond the tirades and allegations they have been
propagating using the media spaces. We are using this medium to draw
attention of all Nigerians to yet another infringement on the fundamental and
inalienable rights of the Obanikoro family. Lovers of freedom should not wait until our democracy is put at irreversible damage. The list of human rights violations and political persecution has reached an alarming rate. We see this as an affront and a further show of shame and ignominy of this present administration hell bent in politically persecuting its perceived opponents in other to stoop them and rubbish their hard earned reputation of untainted public services. To our chagrin, the vehicles driven away were cars and trucks bought since 2006 and thereabouts when Senator Obanikoro served as an Ambassador in Ghana among others which obviously had no bearing with the purported investigation they are
supposedly carrying out.
We condemn in strong terms the brigandage and the idea of Inflicting trauma on innocent dependants and violating their privacies without recourse to the rule ofLaw.
Senator Obanikoro has consulted with his Lawyers and are prepared to
meet them in court to stop this intrusions and persecution,”.
Spokesman for the EFCC, Wilson Uwajeren, confirmed the raid of Obanikoro's home.
He said "I can tell you that no one was harassed in the course of the search and that it is part of ongoing investigation on the man. Our operatives who went there conducted their affairs in best practices and took some vehicles away. I cannot immediately give inventory on the things that were carted away but that will be made known in due time. I do not think we need any permission from the man to do our job. Full details will be disclosed when we get there,” he said.

Brazil sack Coach Dunga after Copa America exit

coach Dunga was sacked on Tuesday after the Selecao’s humiliating group-stage elimination from the Copa America Centenario.
The Brazilian Football Confederation said in a statement it had decided to fire Dunga and “dissolve the Brazilian national team’s coaching staff” following their latest debacle.
The news came after CBF officials met with Dunga earlier on Tuesday.
The exit from the Copa America centennial edition in the United States was the latest blow to demoralised, recession-hit Brazil, which is still reeling from the national team’s 7-1 World Cup semi-final thrashing by Germany on home soil in 2014.
After an opening 0-0 draw with Ecuador was followed by a 7-1 win over Haiti, Brazil needed a draw with Peru on Monday to reach the quarter-finals but instead crashed out of the tournament after controversially losing 1-0 to a disputed goal.
Speculation had swirled that Dunga was on his way out, but the coach said he was not afraid of the sack.
“I am only afraid of death,” Dunga told reporters.
Brazil are now left searching for a new coach just weeks away from hosting the Olympics in August, seeking to win football gold for the first time.

Sheriff takes over PDP secretariat of the Party
The former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Senator Ali Sheriff, at 1:01pm on Monday after three failed attempts gained entry into the national secretariat of the party.
The ex-chairman had early in the morning made spirited attempts to go into the party premises to resume work as chairman. He was, however, restrained from doing so by a detachment of regular and riot policemen as well as officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.
In response to the new development, it was learnt that the Ahmed Markarfi-led caretaker committee hurriedly convened a meeting to discuss its next move.
The Publicity Secretary of the committee, Dayo Adeyeye, confirmed this in a telephone interview with our correspondent.
He said, “We have been meeting since morning. In fact, I am just coming out from one. We will make our position known tomorrow.”
Sheriff, after gaining entry into the premises in the afternoon, told journalists he had resumed as the “authentic chairman” of the party armed with valid court orders.
He explained that the ex parte order issued by a Federal High Court in Port Harcourt, which earlier barred him from acting as the national chairman, lapsed on June 9 which was exactly 14 days after it was issued and since it had not been renewed or extended, he remained the party’s chairman.
The former Borno State governor dismissed the Senator Ahmed Makarfi-led caretaker committee as alien to the PDP constitution and, as such, all of its actions and pronouncements remained null, void and of no effect.
As one of his first acts “on resumption,” Sheriff announced that the party under his leadership had appointed Senator Hope Uzodinma as chairman of the committee saddled with the responsibility of organising a governorship primary for Edo State PDP.
He also announced a reduction in the price for nomination forms from N16m to N10m which he said was payable only to the party’s national account.
Sheriff said, “There is only one PDP. If anybody goes to buy forms from any body called caretaker committee they are on their own.
“The PDP has spoken. The PDP is only one party and we say our form is N10m and we say they should go and pay the amount into the party’s account. If anybody goes and buys from some other body, he is on his own.”
He also said, “The only people that would be screened are those who show evidence of payment of N10m and this should be showed to the chairman of the screening committee. People have the right to do whatever they want. I am not forcing anybody. As a party, we have agreed that our form is N10m and payment should be made to the party’s account.”
He, however, assured those who may have paid N16m “in error,” saying they would be given a refund if they show evidence of payment.
On the fate of the former NWC members, who pledged allegiance to the Makarfi-led committee, Sheriff said the party’s laws were clear.
He said those who failed to resume would be replaced by their deputies. who would by law become substantive holders of the positions in the absence of their direct bosses.
Sheriff said, “The party constitution is very clear; you have the right to resign your appointments, there is a deputy to take over automatically.
“All the deputies are waiting, if by tomorrow, anybody that did not come, we ask the deputy to apply for that office and takeover. We will remain in office until 2018 unless the court says otherwise.”
As early as 7:45am on Monday, Sheriff and a handful of his aides and supporters attempted to enter the building but were politely turned back by the policemen on duty.
He, in company with the party’s immediate past National Secretary, Prof. Wale Oladipo, and ex-National Auditor, Adeyanju Adewole, said they were at the national secretariat to resume work in compliance with a court order.
Trucks and minivans belonging to the police had barricaded all roads leading to the secretariat.
Sheriff and his convoy however manoeuvred their way to reach the main gate before they were stopped.
The former Borno State governor and his supporters, who converged outside the party headquarters when they were not allowed to enter, later returned to make a second attempt at 8:30pm.
Sheriff was thereafter seen making frantic telephone calls in his bid to gain entry into the building.
Deputy Police Commissioner, Chiroma Bala, who was the police officer in charge of the PDP secretariat, informed Sheriff that he did not have authorisation to allow him into the building.
In response, Sheriff said the Inspector-General of Police did not oppose his entry into the secretariat because he was the substantive chairman of the party.
After attempting to physically gain entry into the building the third time at 9:15am, Sheriff left the secretariat at 9.35 am.
But before leaving the secretariat, Sheriff, in an interview with journalists, expressed surprise that policemen would act the way they did when the court order specifically ordered the Inspector-General of Police to provide him and the members of his team adequate security.
