Christian Ronaldo is UEFA Best Player in Europe

Cristiano Ronaldo was named the Best Player in Europe by UEFA on Thursday in
Monaco, beating out club teammate Gareth Bale and city rival Antoine Griezmann in the process. Griezmann had a career year, Bale was fantastic for club and country,
but Ronaldo's performances in Champions League and Euro 2016 meant he was
always going to be the winner.
Ronaldo had a sensational year, scoring 51 goals in 48 matches for Madrid,
and leading Portugal to its first-ever international trophy, scoring three goals on the
way to winning the EURO 2016 Championship.
He was up against Gareth Bale, who didn't have quite as sparkling a year as the man
who occupies the opposite wing as him at Real Madrid. Bale managed 19 league
goals, and bodily dragged Wales to their first-ever European Championship semi-final,
but to be fair, he probably snuck into the top three on the strength of that European
performance, especially considering how Luis Suarez played this year.
Ronaldo earned this trophy. Luis Suarez perhaps deserved to be in the running, and
Antoine Griezmann probably now has a Ronaldo-sized chip on his shoulder after
losing the Champions League final, European Championship final, and now the Best
Player award to Ronaldo, but he can't really have any complaints about this one.
Ronaldo stands supreme once more.

"Now I will challenge the other great goalkeepers the Club has and together I hope we

Kelechi Iheanacho Sign Contract Extension with ManCity,Until 2021

Nigeria international Kelechi Iheanacho has signed a new two-year contract
extension with Manchester City to extend his stay at the club until 2021, the
Premier League side announced on Thursday.
The 19-year-old youngster established himself in the City first team last season, scoring 14 times in all competitions including eight goals in 26 Premier League outings.
This season, much is expected of the teenage hitman under Pep Guardiola, with
the forward tipped to progress and develop his game under the tutelage of the

against Sunderland, when he pressured Black Cats debutant Paddy McNair into

The new contract is a demonstration of just how highly the club and Guardiola
think of Iheanacho, particularly considering the largescale changes that the
Spanish coach is expected to implement at the Etihad Stadium.

Nigeria Slumps to Germany in Olympics .

Germany on Wednesday defeated Nigeria 2-0 in the semi-finals of the Olympic football event, ending the country’s hope of a repeat of their 1996 feat at the games.
The Germans scored their first goal in the 9th minute when a Serge Gnabry’s clever pass into the box fooled the Nigerian defence for Max Meyer to tap the ball into the net.
The 20-year-old Schalke 04 attacking midfielder squared the ball for Lukas Klostermann to apply the finish with just a tap-in.
Substitute Niels Petersen grabbed the second goal in the 88th minute to seal victory for the Germans and a date with the Brazilian for the finals of the Olympic men football event. .

Diego Costa's late Strike ,Begin Conte's Era

Diego Costa's late goal gave  Antonio Conte's Chelsea a 2-1 win over
West Ham at Stamford Bridge on Monday.
The Blues were largely dominant and took the lead shortly after half-
time through Eden Hazard's penalty.

The introduction of Dimitri Payet looked to have helped the Hammers,
who lost record signing Andre Ayew to injury in the first half, snatch a
point as his corner was turned in by James Collins in the 77th minute.

Despite the late nature of their triumph, Chelsea - still unbeaten at home to West
Ham in the Premier League since September 2002 – were deserving of the
victory, with Conte celebrating wildly after the controversial Costa struck.
The Blues are back in action away to Watford on Saturday, while Slaven Bilic's
men have a Europa League tie against Astra on Thursday.

Conte threw on Pedro, Michy Batshuayi and Victor Moses in the closing stages
and was ecstatic when his alterations paid dividends.
It was debutant Batshuayi's flick that picked out Costa more than 20 yards from
goal, with the Spain striker finding the bottom corner to seal a memorable
victory, sending Conte wild on the touchline.

We’ll approve admissions after varsities’ screening — JAMB

Registrar/Chief Executive of JAMB, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has given condition for the 2016 admissions, saying it will only give approval “after appropriate screening of the candidates by the institutions.”
The Registrar/Chief Executive of JAMB, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, said this in a statement on Sunday.
Ojerinde said, “The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board wishes to state that the latest list of candidates sent to all the tertiary institutions contains candidates who qualified for screening based on the individual institution’s capacity. It’s not in any way an admission list.
“However, if this list is not sufficient for the need of any institution, such institution can source from the omnibus printout earlier sent to them by the board. The public and all tertiary institutions should note that admission will only be approved by the board after appropriate screening of the candidates by the institutions.
“The list, which is made up of candidates, who met the national cut-off point within the set criteria, is sent to the institutions. Again, for purposes of clarity, all institutions that have need for more can source from their omnibus printout as stated above. The candid intention of the board is to ensure that available spaces are adequately utilised.”
The Federal Government had, on Saturday, clarified its ban on Post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination and the general admission procedure.
It said it “does not in any way affect the statutory role of the Senate of any university or the academic board of any tertiary institution conducting its admissions.”
The Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, also made the clarification in a statement by the Deputy Director of Press and Public Relations in the Ministry of Education, Mr. Ben. Bem-Goong.
He said the clarification became necessary “following conflicting reports in the media over the roles of universities and JAMB in admission under the new dispensation.”
According to him, the role of JAMB is to conduct the UTME, compile the list of candidates whose scores meet the cut-off marks (180 and above) and send same to the universities.
The institutions, he emphasised, would shortlist the candidates, using the agreed guidelines and thereafter return the shortlisted candidates to JAMB for verification of compliance with the guidelines and issuance of JAMB admission letters.
“For the avoidance of doubt, any screening charges shall apply only to successful candidates, who have been issued admission by the universities of their choice,” Adamu stated.
Meanwhile, the Vice-Chancellor of the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Prof. Ibrahim Garba, has said the Senate of universities in the country should be responsible for setting standards for admissions into their institutions.
Garba stated this while answering questions at the News Agency of Nigeriaforum in Abuja.
The vice-chancellor faulted the situation where JAMB and the Ministry of Education set standards for admission into the university.
Garba stated, “Universities have autonomy by law; each university should set its criteria for taking students.
“But of course, JAMB and the ministry are saying that because it is our country, we must have a policy that regulates, so that we have a good balance but not on quality.
“A university Senate is supposed to set standard for accepting students that it takes and trains and graduates.
“We are hoping that very soon, we will resolve this matter because it is getting more and more embarrassing.
“Even the state universities have told the Federal Government that education is in the concurrent list in the constitution.
“The Federal Government has no control and should not have control over a state university; they have a council appointed by the governor.
“They can only fulfil NUC’s standard requirements, but not admission quota.’’
The ABU vice-chancellor explained that the minister’s directive, leading up to the scrapping of the post-UTME, had created an impasse in universities as they had yet to begin admissions.
According to him, universities could not take the products of JAMB without further testing them.
He said that universities, being the recipients of the candidates, should be able to select those they could train.
Garba added, “We found it, as universities, that the post-UTME tests are the best to get the best. JAMB is only trying to improve, but still not perfect to a point that we can trust.
“Post-UTME has a history; even when it started, JAMB encouraged us to do it. JAMB is improving, but it is not yet there because every year, we receive these products and we see what they are”he said.

Fayose - Buhari should Stop Shielding members of his Government

Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose
‎Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to stop shielding members of his government from probe.
The governor in a statement on Sunday by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, said it smacked of sheer hypocrisy and nepotism for anyone to accept that fraud could have been perpetrated on procurement and award of contracts in an establishment without the involvement of the director of procurement.
“It is now obvious to the entire world that anyone that is in President Buhari’s good books can never be adjudged as corrupt even if such a person is caught looting the entire money in Nigeria’s treasury,” Fayose said.
“There are many petitions relating to the defence from 2007 that are been discarded, the question is why? There are several petitions against APC leaders that are not being looked into, the question is why? Fighting corruption and targeting only opponents of the president is in itself corruption.
“Buhari’s’ Minister of Interior, Major General Abdulrahman Dambazau (retd.) was Chief of Army Staff between 2008 and 2010 and the current Chief Of Army Staff, Major General Tukur Buratai served as Director of Procurements, Defence Headquarters, from 2012 till May 2015.
“It is a fact that the committee in its terms of reference said it queried all procurement from 2007 to 2015. Even the Press Release issued was  titled; ‘Third Interim Report of the Presidential Committee on Audit of Defence Equipment Procurement from 2007 to 2015.’
“First paragraph of the committee report also indicated that it used 2007-2015 as reference, stating that the committee ‘analysed procurement contracts awarded by or for the Nigerian Army between 2007 and 2015.’

Turkish Crowds Rally For Democracy Calls After Coup Attempt .

Large crowds have gathered in Istanbul and other cities after calls by Turkish
authorities to defend democracy after the failed military coup.
Less than 24 hours earlier thousands turned out to help rebuff the plot.
President Erdogan wants the extradition of US-based cleric Fethullah Gulen over the plot. But Mr Gulen rejects any suggestion of links to what happened.
Nearly 3,000 soldiers have been detained and some 2,700 judges sacked as the
government re-asserts power.
Generals are reported to be among those detained.
Prime Minister Binali Yildirim called the coup attempt a "black stain on Turkish
democracy".
Explosions and firing were heard in key cities on Friday night. Official figures put the number of civilians and police killed at 161, while 104 soldiers involved in the coup also died. The number of injured was 1,440.
Why did coup happen? - Jeremy Bowen, BBC News Middle East Editor
The attempted coup happened because Turkey is deeply divided over President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's project to transform the country and because of the contagion of violence from the war in Syria.
President Erdogan and his AK Party have become experts at winning elections, but there have always been doubts about his long-term commitment to democracy. He is a
political Islamist who has rejected modern Turkey's secular heritage. Mr Erdogan has become increasingly authoritarian and is trying to turn himself into a strong executive president.
From the beginning Mr Erdogan's government has been deeply involved in the war in Syria, backing Islamist opposition to President Assad. But violence has spread across the border, helping to reignite the fight with the Kurdish PKK, and making Turkey a target for the jihadists who call themselves Islamic State.
That has caused a lot of disquiet. Turkey has faced increasing turmoil and the attempt to overthrow President Erdogan will not be the last of it.
Events began on Friday evening as tanks took up positions on two of the bridges over the Bosphorus Strait in Istanbul, blocking traffic. Troops were seen on the streets and low-flying military jets were filmed over Ankara.
An army faction then issued a statement that a "peace council" was running Turkey and had launched the coup "to ensure and restore constitutional order, democracy, human rights and freedoms".
During the violence, the Turkish parliament and presidential buildings in Ankara were attacked. Gunfire was also heard outside Istanbul police headquarters and tanks were said to be stationed outside Istanbul airport.
There were reports of fierce clashes in Taksim Square and gunfire and explosions wereheard near the square. One of the helicopters being flown by rebels was reportedly shotdown by government troops in Ankara.
President Erdogan, then in the south-west resort of Marmaris, made a televised address
via his mobile phone, urging people to take to the streets to oppose the uprising.
After flying to Istanbul, Mr Erdogan said: "What is being perpetrated is a treason and a rebellion. They will pay a heavy price."

Nigeria Ranks 4th has 35% on investment return in the world

The Acting Managing Director, Bank of Industry (BOI), Mr Waheed Olagunju, said Nigeria ranked fourth with 35 per cent on return investment in the World.
Olagunju said this on Saturday in Lagos on the sidelines of BOI media parley titled: “Sustaining Nigeria’s industrial sector growth through impactful partnership.”
He said that a lot of countries are in competition for investment resources.
According to Olagunju, the return on investment is much higher in Nigeria than other countries.
He said that return on investment should not be taken for granted, adding, “we should try and de-risk our environment, improve on climate and continue to take measures by increasing our ranking in doing business.
Olatunji said, “Industrialisation is a multi-faceted process, no single agency can capsulate industrialisation of any country, so all hands must be on the deck.
“In terms of investment returns, we have ranked number four with 35 per cent.
“Nigerians might go to other countries where they have 15 per cent return on investment where the risks are not as high as Nigeria.
“So we have to put all those things into consideration by ensuring that we promote industrialisation and transform the Nigeria economy within the shortest time possible.”
He said that if those things were not done, Nigeria may not be able to harmonise the challenges in the country, particularly that of unemployment
punch.

FG Confirms Ban on Post-UTME, Admission Process

Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu
Federal Government on Saturday clarified its ban on Post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination and the general admission procedures, saying it “does not in any way affect the statutory role of the Senate of any University or the academic boards of any tertiary institution conducting its admissions.”
The Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, stated this in a statement by the Deputy Director (Press and Public Relations) in the Ministry of Education, Mr. Ben. Bem-Goong.
He said the clarification became necessary “following conflicting reports in the media over the roles of universities and the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board in admission under the new dispensation.”
According to him, the role of JAMB is to conduct the UTME, compile the list of candidates whose scores meet the cut-off marks (180 and above) and send same to the Universities.
The Universities, he emphasised, will shortlist the candidates using the agreed guidelines and thereafter return the shortlisted candidates to JAMB for verification of compliance to guidelines and subsequent issuance of JAMB admission letters.

Niger Delta - Economy needs urgent fix, Nigerians are hungry

President Muhammadu Buhari

Niger Delta group, Urhobo Monitoring and Development Group, on Saturday called on President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration to fix the country’s ailing economy from sliding into total collapse.
Prince Kingsley Oberuruaria, National President of UMDG, told journalists that Nigerians are hungry noting that the economy needs proactive measure to prevent it sliding into eminent ‘recession.’
Oberuruaria stressed that there was nothing wrong for a government to wedge war against corruption but the same attention should also be accorded to the nation’s dying economy where the average Nigerian can hardly afford a meal per day at present.
The group said it has observed that the APC-led federal government was not doing enough to tackle the economy which it reminded the government that hunger knows no political or religious affiliations.
It also expressed reservation with the ongoing diversification into economy and other sectors saying that the Niger Delta region was being ignore in that directive.
“Fighting corruption is good but the revival of the economy needs greater attention in this present time where the average Nigerian can barely afford a meal in the present circumstances. The truth is that Nigerians are hungry and you don’t need a soothsayer to know”, UMDG boss added.

It added that effort to know what the government was doing so far to raise living standard of Niger Delta, it said, “We observed that the government diversification is mainly concentrated in the north, nothing so far in the south especially oil-rich Niger Delta.

France:, Bastille Day Attack in Nice

According to BBC, the killing of 84 people celebrating Bastille Day is the worst attack on France since
the 13 November attacks last year.
France has been under a state of emergency ever since and security across the country
was high, with intelligence services warning of the risk of further attacks.
This is what we know so far.
The terror began a little after 22:30 (20:30 GMT) on Thursday, shortly after thousands
of people had watched a firework display on the seafront in Nice, at the end of a day
marking France's national holiday, Bastille Day.
There had been a mood of celebration and the crowd had enjoyed an air force display during the evening.
As families strolled along the city's renowned Promenade des Anglais, a large white lorry careered at full speed towards them. The vehicle mounted the kerb then went back on the road, zigzagging for up to 2km (1.25 miles), as the driver intentionally drove into the crowd.
A local MP spoke of hundreds of people being run over.
Police finally managed to bring the lorry to a halt near the luxury Palais de la
Mediterranee hotel.
"I was opposite the Palais de la Mediterranee when I saw a lorry at high speed running
over people. I saw it with my own eyes, people tried to stop it," said one witness.
The driver opened fire on people in the crowd, according to local reports. Police fired back and the driver was eventually shot dead. Images from the scene showed the windscreen and front of the lorry raked with bullets. Interior ministry officials said the attacker had been "neutralised".
The driver has been identified locally as a 31-year-old man of Franco-Tunisian origin from identity papers found inside the lorry.
He was named locally as Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel. Police are yet to confirm the details, but were said to be searching his home in Nice.
The attacker was said to have hired the lorry from a rental in Saint-Laurent-du-Var, a town to the west of Nice two days earlier.
They also found guns and a grenade inside the lorry, but later said these were fake.
However, he was armed with a pistol, and had opened fire on police before being shot dead. It was not initially clear if he was acting alone.
There were rumours, which later proved to be false, that hostages had been taken in two nearby hotels.
Residents were told to stay indoors amid fears of more violence.
Nice residents and tourists alike were caught up in the attack.
It was clear that some of those who died were children, taken to the seafront by their parents to see the Bastille Day firework display.
Of the dozens of people wounded, as many as 54 were children who were being treated at Lenval children's hospital in Nice, reports said.
Among the 84 who died, according to reports, was the assistant head of the Nice
border police, Jean-Marc Leclerc.
In the hours after the attacks, lists were posted on social media of people missing since Thursday night.
Among the many names were Estelle, Morgane, Alphonse, Lea (aged seven) and Eva (aged nine).
How have the authorities reacted?
It soon became clear that many people had died, although the full scale of the disaster
was unclear. The dead and injured were taken to the local Centre Hospitalier
Universitaire de Nice.
The hospital launched its crisis mode for exceptional health situations and put out an
emergency number for families: 00 33 (0)4 93 72 22 22.
In the area around Nice, the anti-terror alert has been raised to its highest level.
President Francois Hollande was flown back to Paris from a visit to Avignon, joining
Prime Minister Manuel Valls in a crisis room. Mr Valls declared three days of mourning starting on Saturday.
Who was behind the attack?
It was not long before President Hollande said it was "an attack whose terrorist nature cannot be denied".
Anti-terrorist prosecutors in Paris have launched an inquiry for murder and attempted
murder as part of an organised terrorist strike.
Earlier this week, France's DGSI internal security organisation warned of the danger of further attacks from Islamist militants with "booby-trapped vehicles and bombs".

Dino Melaye - Tinubu’s Wife Called Me a Dog,

The All Progressives Congress member representing Kogi West Senatorial District, Senator Dino Melaye, addressing journalists in Abuja, Thursday.
Sunday Aborisade, Olufemi Atoyebi, Femi Makinde and Toluwani Eniola
The All Progressives Congress member representing Kogi West Senatorial District, Senator Dino Melaye, on Thursday said he called Senator Oluremi Tinubu a stupid woman on the floor of the Senate during an executive session because she also referred to him as a dog and a thug.
Melaye, who addressed parliamentary reporters in the National Assembly, however, denied using vulgar words against Oluremi, the wife of the leader of the APC, Senator Bola Tinubu.
He vowed not to apologise to Tinubu for allegedly assaulting his wife even as he said that the APC leader could not determine his future political career because the politician was not God.
Melaye said, “…I did not use any insolent, abusive, degrading or mannerless language. So, there was no reaction from any of our colleagues as regards my presentation. After I spoke, so many other senators spoke and I did not mention the name of any senator while I was making my presentation.
“Unfortunately, Senator Oluremi Tinubu got up and for reasons only known to her, the first thing she said was that she’s being harassed in this chamber by Senator Melaye.
“I kept quiet at that point. …At that point I was still very calm, she got up again and said that ‘this thug must be tamed.’ At that point, I got up and I told her that she is very stupid. The next statement from her is that ‘you are a dog.’
“She called me a dog and when she called me a dog I stood up and I reacted and I told her that this is not Bourdillon and that she should look at my face, I am not one of those senators who normally come to prostrate to them in Bourdillon.
“ I told her I am from Kogi State, I am not from Lagos State and that there would never be a day that I will come to you for political assistance. These were my words and she went on shouting dog, thug.
“I want to tell you gentlemen of the press that for every action there must be a reaction. When I got up to address my colleagues she was not the only senator there.”
Melaye also denied ever saying he would impregnate Mrs. Tinubu.
He said, “It is fallacious, malicious and a lie that I said I will impregnate Mrs. Tinubu. Biologically, it is even impossible to impregnate Mrs. Tinubu because she has reached menopause.
“If you also look at that statement for those of us who are intellectually mobile, how can you say you want to beat somebody and at the same time you want to impregnate the person if you juxtapose the two is there any correlation? Does it make any logical sense? So, when they planted this falsehood they did not think deeply.”
He also said though he read in the newspaper that the APC leader was demanding an apology from him for abusing his wife, he would not do so now.
“I read from the social media that Senator Ahmed Bola Tinubu through his media aide is asking me to apologise. I will not believe that a man of his calibre will ask for apology without hearing from both parties.
“However, when I get confirmation that Senator Ahmed Bola Tinubu actually is the one asking me to apologise, I will also address him accordingly.”
Meanwhile, the South-West zone of the APC has warned Melaye to stay away from the zone for threatening to beat Mrs. Tinubu.
In a statement signed by the Zonal National Secretary, APC South-West, Ayo Afolabi, on Thursday, the party described Melaye as an example of ‘vagabond in power’, saying, however, that it was not surprised by Melaye’s conduct towards a woman because he never had a successful marriage.
“Meanwhile Senator Melaye should regard the South West Zone as a no-go area if he refused to tender a public apology and desist from such unruly behaviours on any colleague from any party of this country in the future. A word is enough for the wise.”

The party also called on the Inspector General of Police to take note of Melaye’s threat to kill anybody that testified against the accused persons in the Senate forgery case.

House of Reps want employment restriction for foreigners

Leader of the House of Representatives, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila

The House of Representatives sought tougher measures on Thursday to restrict the employment of foreign nationals by firms or organisations in the country.
A bill to “restrict” the issuance of work permits to foreigners by the Federal Government passed second reading at the House.
The bill, which was sponsored by the Majority Leader of the House, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila, was the House’s response to how to address the growing unemployment in the country.
The bill, an amendment to the Immigration Act, 2015, raised the penalty for violation from the extant N1m to N2m.
In addition, it provided that foreigners would be considered for a job only when it was proven that no Nigerian possessed the requisite qualifications for the job.
In October last year, the House had also passed a resolution urging the government to declare “state of emergency” in the labour market in the country.
Defending the latest bill, Gbajabiamila said it was a further step taken by the legislature to find solutions to unemployment.
He gave details of the provisions of the bill, “Consequently, Sections 36 is being amended basically to further restrict and regulate employment of foreign nationals/expatriates and to provide for stiffer punishment for violators of the provisions of the Act.

Driver's confession on Fayose,EFCC Saga

Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose
A bullion van driver has confessed to conveying the N1.219bn, which the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission alleged was delivered to the Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, in the build-up to the June 2014 governorship election in the state.
Fayose is being investigated by the EFCC for allegedly receiving the N1.219bn through the Office of the National Security Adviser for his campaign in 2014, an amount said to be part of the N4.7bn allegedly diverted from the ONSA under Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.).
EFCC investigations had revealed that the N4.7bn was paid into a bank account of Sylvan McNamara, a company in which the sons of a former Minister of State for Defence, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, are said to be directors.
About N1.219bn was allegedly flown to Akure on a private plane during the build-up to the Ekiti State governorship election.
Fayose was alleged to have received the N1.219bn through his bosom friend, Abiodun Agbele.
The bullion van driver, Mr. Olaoluwa Omotoso, reportedly drove the bullion van to the Akure airport tarmac on June 17, 2014, to transport the N1.219bn allegedly flown from Lagos by Obanikoro.
Omotoso told EFCC detectives that he made two separate trips to the airport because of the large volume of cash.
The driver told the anti-graft agency that part of the money was taken to a bank in Alagbaka, Akure, on the instruction of Fayose’s friend, Agbele, while the remaining money was taken to Spotless Hotel, Ado Ekiti, which is owned by Fayose and his wife, Feyisetan.
A detective in the commission, who spoke to our correspondent on Thursday, said, “Omotoso explained that on June 17, 2014, he was given a directive to go to the Akure airport to convey some funds. He said he went to the airport twice to move the money. He said some of the money was taken to a bank while he, along with Agbele, moved the remaining cash to Spotless Hotel, Ado Ekiti.
“He said the money was moved in three vehicles, including one bullion van and two Toyota Hilux vans. The two Toyota Hilux vans had some soldiers inside for security while Agbele was with him in the Hilux van.
“He said he did not know exactly how much was conveyed. He explained that Agbele held the keys to the vault in the bullion van. On getting to Spotless Hotel at night, they offloaded the cash and Agbele entered the vehicle to search and ensure that no money was left behind. Agbele then returned the keys and Omotoso drove off.”
Meanwhile, the Managing Director of Zenith Bank, Mr. Peter Amangbo, has denied that the bank sponsored the governorship campaign of Fayose in 2014, contrary to the governor’s claim.
Amangbo told the EFCC that the bank had only one branch in Ekiti State, wondering why the bank would invest in Fayose when the state government had no account with the bank.
Fayose had claimed that his campaign was funded by the bank and a few private individuals.
The bank MD said at no time did he hold a meeting with Fayose and his friend, Agbele.

A source at the EFCC stated that Amangbo said at no time did he meet with Abiodun Agbele or any representative of Fayose. He said the allegation that the bank funded the Ekiti State governorship election was false

Amnesty International: Fault Cameroon of human Rights Violation

President Paul Biya of Cameroon
Amnesty International has accused Cameroonian authorities of arbitrarily arresting more than 1,000 people as part of their fight against Islamist militant group, Boko Haram, and dozens have died of disease or been tortured to death.
Alioune Tine, Regional Director for the Human Rights Group, on Thursday in Yaounde said in a report that more than eight people are dying each month in Maroua Prison and prisoners are kept in inhumane, overcrowded and unsanitary conditions.
“Cameroon is pursuing the right objective, but in arbitrarily arresting, torturing and subjecting people to enforced disappearances the authorities are using the wrong means.
Tine called on the government to implement measures to prevent abuses including an end to arbitrary arrests and torture and said the government should ensure detainees have access to their families and to lawyers.
He said since the release of the report government is yet to comment on the report, which was based on interviews starting last October with more than 200 people in the Far North region that borders Nigeria and Chad.
Tine said there were evidences to show that more than 15,000 people have been killed and 2 million displaced in Nigeria and neighbouring Chad, Niger and Cameroon during Boko Haram’s seven-year campaign to carve out an Islamic caliphate in northeast Nigeria.
“Since a regional offensive last year drove the insurgents from most strongholds, Boko Haram has waged a guerrilla-style campaign against civilians.

OPC Unwilling to engage pipeline vandals – Gani Adams

The National Coordinator of the Oodua People’s Congress, Gani Adams, has expressed his organisation’s reluctance to engage suspected militants and pipeline vandals who have been terrorising some communities in Lagos and Ogun states.
Speaking during a press conference on Thursday in Lagos to address the recent spate of attacks by suspected militants and pipeline vandals in South-West Nigeria, Adams condemned the attacks and described them as “criminal.”
He said that even though some communities have been seeking the support of the OPC on the issue, he had to be sure that its members would not be criminalised for any actions taken.
According to Adams, the OPC had been demonised by people, including those of Yoruba descent, security agents and the media in the past.
He said, “What happened just about 10 days ago in Ikorodu is highly unfortunate. But people of Yoruba are the only people that play politics with their lives and properties. When you have a dog that is preventing criminals from coming to your house and you take it to the veterinary to remove its teeth; when criminals come to your house, what will the dog use to fight them?”
“We will put our house in order. We will work and do the appropriate thing at the appropriate time.
Would law enforcement agencies not twist it against us again? We still have some of our members in Kirikiri and Ikoyi prisons on an issue related to securing a street. An armed robber was killed and the police twisted it as murder.
“What we are saying now is that it has happened and the law enforcement agents cannot arrest any of the vandals, if we move to do it, are we sure the law enforcement agents would not use it against us? Those are the two main things because we have worked to redeem the image of the OPC and we don’t want anything to tarnish it again.”
The OPC leader also criticised President Muhammadu Buhari for condoling with the recent victims of terrorism in Saudi Arabia and ignoring Nigerians recently killed by suspected militants and Fulani herdsmen in South-West Nigeria and Benue State.

He said, “The President was sending his condolences to the people of Saudi Arabia. How many people died in Medina? Just less than 10. He sent his condolences to the United States after the attack in Orlando, and he has never said anything about what happened in Ikorodu, Lagos State, and Agatu, Benue State, where many people were killed

NDLEA Seizes Cocaine From Woman, Arrests 63 Suspects

NDLEA

A woman, Godfrey Rita, has been arrested by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency for allegedly trafficking in a drug that tested positive for cocaine.
The 46-year-old woman had reportedly trafficked 1.5 kilogrammes of the substance in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, on her way from Spain, where she worked as a fashion designer.
It was learnt that the drug, packaged in a polythene bag, was intercepted at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Ikeja, Lagos, during the screening of passengers on the plane.
Another suspect, 26-year-old Adebayo Seriki, was said to have been apprehended at the airport with 2.1 kg of heroin onboard an Ethiopian airline from Mozambique.
Rita, who hails from Edo State, reportedly told the NDLEA she was promised N500,000 to smuggle the drug.
She said “I am a trainee fashion designer living in Spain. I had financial problems and I was introduced to drug trafficking by a friend. I was told a man would give me the drug while in transit in Dubai. While at the Dubai airport, a man approached me and asked if I was Rita and I said yes. He said he was from my friend, and he gave me the drug in a duty-free bag.
“I was surprised when the drug was discovered here and not in Dubai. I never checked it. I just kept it in my bag the way it was given to me. I am disappointed in myself.”
Seriki, an indigene of Osun State, said he had left Nigeria as a footballer in search of a good club.
“After a fruitless search for a football club in Tanzania for some months, I moved to Mozambique. Still, I could not secure a club. In the process, I exhausted my money. I was so disappointed and frustrated that I needed to return home. At this point, I had no choice but to agree to smuggle drugs. I regret my action,” he added.
Meanwhile, the NDLEA Commander at the MMIA, Mr. Ahmadu Garba, said 63 suspected drug traffickers were arrested at the MMIA between January and June, 2016, with 484.1 kg of drugs, comprising cocaine, heroin, cannabis, methamphetamine and other psychoactive substances.
He added that 46 of the suspects were males.

EFCC to re-arraign Nyako, son For N29bn Fraud.

Nyako
The Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice Ibrahim Auta, has re-assigned the trial of a former Governor of Adamawa State, Murtala Nyako, and son, Abdul-Aziz, on charges of money laundering to another judge of the Abuja Division of the court, Justice Okon Abang.
This development followed the death of the former trial judge, Justice Evoh Chukwu, early last month.
Lawyers, who are involved in the case, confirmed the re-assignment of the case to Justice Abang in separate interviews with our correspondent on Thursday.
The case was initially scheduled to commence afresh by a way of re-arraignment before Justice Abang on Thursday, but the court could not sit due to the extension of the Eid-el-Fitri holiday announced by the Federal Government on Tuesday.
Though no date of the re-arraignment has been officially announced, it is suspected that it will take place on Friday (today).
It was learnt that the prosecution, led by Mr. Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), had called six witnesses before Justice Chukwu’s sudden death.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission had initially, on August 7, 2015, arraigned Nyako, along with his son, Abdul-Aziz, and Zulkifikk Abba, Abubakar Aliyu as well as five firms.
They were arraigned on 37 counts of money laundering, involving alleged diversion of N29,099,430,879.92 belonging to the Adamawa State Government.
The firms arraigned along with Nyako and his son were Blue Opal Limited, Sebore Farms and Extension Limited, Pagoda Fortunes Limited, Tower Assets Management Limited and Crust Energy Limited.
Abdul-Aziz is the senator representing Adamawa Central in the National Assembly.

All the accused persons pleaded not guilty to the 37 counts when they were initially arraigned.

Fayose Says I’ve N300m in my Zenith Bank Account

Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose

Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State has confirmed an allegation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission that he had N300m in one of his accounts in Zenith Bank with number 9013074033.
The governor’s Special Adviser on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, said this in a series of tweets on Facebook  under the hash tag ‘Fayose speaks.’
Fayose, however, maintained that he deposited the money into his fixed deposit account before he was sworn-in as governor and had declared it in his asset declaration form.
He, therefore, rubbished the EFCC reports that he deposited the money in April 2015, six months after he had become governor.
Olayinka tweeted, “I declared in my assets declaration form that I had N300m in my fixed deposit account in Zenith Bank #Fayose Speaks.”
He maintained that he never received campaign funds from the Office of the National Security Adviser in 2014.
He added, “I did not get money from the NSA Office to fund my election. It is just a conspiracy; it will fail like that of 2006.
“By the end of this month, we are starting a social welfare scheme in which 7,000 people will be getting N5, 000 per month #FayoseSpeaks
“We deceive ourselves too much in this country. Even our population that they said is 150 million is not true.”
The EFCC, which has since frozen the account had alleged that Fayose’s associate, Abiodun Agbele, allegedly received N1.219bn from the ONSA on behalf of Fayose and then paid part of the money into the governor’s current account and company account.
The commission had also alleged that Fayose personally moved N300m from the money and used it to open a fixed deposit account in April 2015.

The EFCC had said, “Abbey (Agbele) directed the bank to pay N137m into the account of Ayodele Fayose with number 1003126654 and Bank Verification Number 22338867502. The bank teller dated June 26, 2014, was filled by Abbey with teller number 0556814.

Avengers Bomb NNPC, Chevron facilities

Niger Delta Avengers, on Monday night, continued its unrelenting attacks on the nation’s oil facilities, blowing up two manifolds operated by the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company at Batan community in the Warri South-West Local Government Area of Delta State.
Two other trunk lines, belonging to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation in the area were also destroyed by the militants.
Also, an oil well, operated by Chevron Nigeria Limited at the Makaraba village of Gbaramatu Kingdom, was also attacked last night.
Sources identified the oil well as Chevron well 10.
The Batan attack occurred between 10.35pm and 11.20pm on Monday while the attackers blew up the Chevron’s oil well at about the same time.
Military and community sources confirmed the attacks to our correspondent on Tuesday.
Community sources, who spoke on to our correspondent on condition of anonymity on the telephone, said the attacked NPDC manifold was a few metres away from Batan Flow Station, also owned by the company.
It was learnt that a loud explosion accompanied the attack on the manifold before two separate explosions hit the NNPC pipelines supplying crude to the Warri and Kaduna refineries.
The crude produced at the flow station is discharged through the manifolds to Forcados Terminal in the Burutu Local Government Area of the state.
Military sources, who confirmed the attacks, noted that the Trans-Forcados Pipelines were major trunk lines feeding the Shell Forcados with crude.
Batan community chairman, Mr. Ogudu Dickson, confirmed the incident in an interview with our correspondent on the telephone on Tuesday.
Dickson, while lamenting the incident, said the people of the area lived in fears because they had not seen such heavy explosions since the resurgence on militancy in the region.
He added that his people were in danger, fearing that fire could break out anytime because of the huge spill in the creeks following the Sunday and Monday night attacks on oil facilities in the areas.
He noted that some of the residents were already fleeing to Warri and other neighbouring communities for safety.
One of the military sources told our correspondent that troops were caught unawares by the Monday night’s bombings as the militants took advantage of the low tide of the sea to carry out their nefarious activities.
In low tide, boats, including the military gunboats, cannot navigate through the swamps where most of these oil facilities are located except with wooden smaller boats.
It was further gathered that the attacked Chevron oil well, NPDC’s manifolds and the affected trunk lines had been shut down by their operators.
The spokesperson for the Delta State Police Command, Celestina Kalu, confirmed the attacks when contacted on the telephone.
Kalu, a Superintendent of Police, added that the extent of the damage had not been ascertained.
The Public Relations Officer of the 4 Brigade of the Nigerian Army in Benin, the Edo State capital, Capt. M. Maidawa, could not immediately confirm the attacks when contacted on Tuesday. He told our correspondent to give him time to check and get back.
He had yet to call back as of the time of filing this report.
Meanwhile, the spokesperson for the Niger Delta Avengers, Mudoch Agbinibo, confirmed the attacks in a statement posted on the group’s website.
The statement partly read, “At 10pm, Niger Delta Avengers blew up Chevron Well 10, close to Otunana flow station.

US Warns of Terror Attacks on Lagos Hotels.

United States on Tuesday warned of possible attacks on expatriates and foreign visitors in Lagos during the public holidays marking the Eid-el-Fitri celebrations.
The US Mission in Nigeria, in a statement on its website, said terror groups planned to attack hotels and waterfronts visited by expatriates during the holiday.
“The US Mission in Nigeria advises that groups associated with terrorist activities might be planning attacks on hotels in Lagos frequented by international visitors, including those located on waterfronts, during the Eid-el-Fitr holidays,” the United States Consulate  Nigeria  said in a statement.
The Federal Government had initially declared Tuesday and Wednesday as public holidays, but extended the holiday to Thursday following the non-sighting of the moon in Nigeria on Monday which determines the end of the Ramadan fast.
The US warning, posted on its embassy’s website, which was not specific, was not the first warning about possible attacks on locations frequented by expatriates.
It stated, “The US Mission in Nigeria reminds you to review your personal security plans, remain aware of your surroundings, including local events, and monitor local news stations for updates. Be vigilant and take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security.”
According to an AFP report, a similar security warning was given in December last year and in May 2014, when diplomats were warned of possible attacks on two Sheraton hotels in Lagos.

Meanwhile, there was tight security around top hotels frequented by expatriates, wealthy Nigerians and politicians in the Federal Capital Territory on Tuesday.
One of our correspondents, who went round, observed that additional security measures had been taken to secure the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Maitama.
A new security post with sandbags to protect security operatives had also been erected with armed security operatives on duty.
More sniffer dogs were also deployed while armed security personnel were seen manning strategic parts of the hotel.
At the Sheraton Hotel, the private security guards at the gate were seen meticulously screening vehicles entering the premises.
It was gathered that undercover security operatives were on the ground to foil any security breach and give full protection to guests and hotel workers.
The NICON Luxury Hotel, Abuja also had armed security guards, who were complemented by the hotel’s private guards, who took time to search incoming vehicles.
Also, officials at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, told one of our correspondents that the security awareness at the facility had been high, particularly since the terrorist attack at Ataturk Airport Istanbul, Turkey.
According to them, the number of officers from the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, Nigerian Army, Navy and the Police Force has been increased considerably in the past three weeks.
“Security situation has been tense world over, not just in Nigeria and this has warranted increased security presence at the Abuja airport in the past three weeks, especially after the recent attacks by terrorists at the Istanbul airport in Turkey,” an official said on Tuesday.
When The PUNCH visited the Sheraton Hotel and Protea Hotel in the Ikeja GRA area of Lagos on Tuesday night, the presence of security personnel was noticed within and around the hotels.
At the gate of one of the hotels, apart from the security guards at the gate, who had searched the boot of one of our correspondent’s car and other cars, two men in suit, thoroughly searched places and occupants of each car.
They equally asked the mission of each visitor to the hotel before any one was allowed in.
“There are men of the Department of State Services outside and inside the hotel. They are unidentifiable except you are smart enough to notice them. There are about 20 of them,” a worker at one of the hotels said.
“There about 65 foreigners on our visitors’ list. What this means is that many companies, since Monday, have been lodging their workers here for safety reasons.”
A source at the Eko Hotel and Suites on Victoria Island, Lagos, said there had not been any change in security measures at the hotel.
She said, “I also heard about the threat. It was my husband that actually called me from home to tell me about it. But so far, I have not seen any change in security measures at the hotel. We have just been running business as usual.”
A source in the DSS told our correspondent that the service had been informed of the impending attack since last week and had put measures in place to forestall the threat.
The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, stated, “We were informed last week that international terrorist networks were planning attacks in select locations.
“In the last five days, you have seen attacks in Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Iraq. These attacks were not coincidental but carefully planned on an international scale.
“We were told that Nigeria is also on the terror list and the real target is Lagos because it will make international headlines being the commercial nerve centre of West Africa.
“So, we are warning Nigerians to avoid crowded places for now. It is very important. These terrorists can even use little children or women.”
But the Lagos State Police Command says it has put in place operational strategies to forestall terror attacks on any location in the the state.
The state Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, in an interview with one of our correspondents on Tuesday, said the command was on top of the situation.
Owoseni, ‘‘Measures have been put in place to forestall any unfortunate incident. We are on top of this situation.’’
In a statement later on Tuesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Dolapo Badmos, added that the police would ensure maximum protection of lives during the Eid-el-Fitri.
Badmos, a Superintendent of Police, added, “Adequate and necessary measures have been put in place during and after the Eid-el-Fitri celebrations.
“Furthermore, operational strategies have been devised to ensure hitch-free celebrations around all praying grounds, recreational centres, hotels and other public places.’’
Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday condemned the Monday suicide bombing, which occurred in Islam’s second holiest city, Madinah, Saudi Arabia.
He described those responsible for the attacks as merchants of evil.
In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, the President condoled with Saudi authorities over the attack, saying the development was a desecration of all that was sacred and holy as it took place near the Prophet’s Mosque and on one of the holy days of Ramadan.
He said the attacks had again shown that terrorism was not about religion.
Buhari said, “It validates the claim that terrorism really has nothing to do with Islam. Purveyors of terror are simply agents of the devil.

Guardiola Warning Signal to City’s star players

Pep Guardiola has warned his Manchester City players that they have to prove themselves all over again following his arrival at the club.
The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich coach was making his first public appearance as City handler on Sunday in front of thousands of fans at a festival held at their Academy Stadium.
The Spaniard is already familiar with the players he is inheriting, having faced his new club in Champions League contests in two of his three seasons at Bayern Munich.
In addition, the new manager has also been able to glean information on the squad from director of football Txiki Begiristain, a close friend going back to their days together as Barcelona players.
Guardiola has also moved quickly to bring in new talent, signing German midfielder Ilkay Gundogan from Borussia Dortmund for £20million and Spain winger Nolito from Celta Vigo for £13.8million.
But he insists that all of his players are starting with a clean slate – regardless of what they have achieved in the past.
Guardiola said: “I know them. I have played against Manchester City in the last two or three years many times. I spoke many times with Txiki too.
“I know them, I know their quality but they have to show me, show the fans again. The past is the past. The people don’t come here to remember what we did. We are here to try again.”
Guardiola has indicated that he will not seek to inflame a long-running rivalry with Jose Mourinho, who took charge of City’s neighbours Manchester United in late May.
The two managers were involved in a number of public verbal confrontations in the two years between Mourinho’s arrival at Real Madrid in 2010 and Guardiola’s departure from Barcelona in 2012.
That rivalry reached its low point during a Spanish Super Cup meeting in 2011, when Mourinho was captured on camera poking Guardiola’s then-assistant Tito Vilanova in the eye during a touchline brawl.
The north west of England will host several of football’s big managerial names next season, with Jurgen Klopp in place at Liverpool and Ronald Koeman in charge at Everton, but Guardiola insists that the focus should be on the players.
“The people don’t come to see who the manager is, they come to see how good our players are. I don’t think just that’s just the case this year, but in the past as well, with Klopp, with Conte, with Ranieri, Mourinho Pochettino, Koeman. The reason I work here is just to help the players.”
Guardiola, meanwhile, laughed off suggestions that he was about to make an attempt to bring five-time world footballer of the year Lionel Messi to City.
The Barcelona forward, who retired from international football last week, won two of his four Champions League titles when Guardiola was the club’s manager.
