BREAKING! No Strike But Protests On Tuesday - NLC

The Nigeria Labour Congress has made u-turn as regards the nationwide strike slated for Tuesday.

The body says it will on Tuesday hold a nationwide protest to drive its demand for the upward review of the national minimum wage from N18,000 to N30,000.

The General Secretary of the NLC, Dr. Peter Ozo-Eson, said in a statement that there would be no strike for now.

Ozo-Eson, therefore, asked members of the public to disregard reports that the strike would begin tomorrow.

The statement read in part, “It has come to our attention that some sections of the news media have largely misrepresented our action plan in reaction to the delay in transmitting the recommendations of the Tripartite Committee on a new national minimum wage to the National Assembly by President Muhammadu Buhari.

“It should be recalled that the National Executive Council of the NLC met on December 17 last year and directed that we hold nationwide mobilisation of workers and our allies if, by December 31, 2018, the bill on the national minimum wage has yet to be sent to the National Assembly to be passed as an Act of Parliament.

Military hijack Power From President Bongo In Gabon Coup.

The military in Gabon have launched a coup against the government of ailing president Ali Bongo.
seasonnews.com.ng confirmed  that early on Monday, one soldier flanked by two others holding guns read out a statement saying the military had seizedcontrol of the government “to restore democracy” to the country.
In a message on state radio, military officers declared their dissatisfaction with Bongo, who is recovering from a stroke in Morocco.
A New Year’s Eve address by Bongo “reinforced doubts about the president’s ability to continue to carry out of the responsibilities of his office”, said Lieut Kelly Ondo Obiang, the leader of the self-declared Patriotic Movement of the Defence and Security Forces of Gabon.
The radio message was broadcast at about 4.30am local time (0530 GMT), and the TV message shortly afterwards. A source close to the government said there were gunshots around the national television station, but that the plotters appeared to be a small group of soldiers.
A spokesman for the presidency told Reuters he would make a statement shortly.
Bongo, 59, was hospitalised in October in Saudi Arabia after suffering a stroke. He has been in Morocco since November to continue treatment.
In his new year speech, Bongo acknowledged he had health problems but said he was recovering. He slurred some of his words and did not move his right arm, but otherwise appeared in reasonable health.
On Friday, Donald Trump said 80 US military personnel had been deployed to Gabon in response to the possibility of violent demonstrations in Democratic Republic of the Congo, where authorities have delayed the publication of results of an election on 30 December.
In a letter to congressional leaders the US president said the personnel were there to protect US citizens and the embassy, but also “in furtherance of United States national security and foreign policy interests”, adding that they would be there until the DRC’s security situation looked stable enough that they were not needed – and that more could be deployed if necessary.
The Bongo family has ruled the oil-producing country for nearly half a century. Bongo has been president since succeeding his father, Omar, who died in 2009. His re-election in 2016 was marred by claims of fraud and violent protest.
1964 COUP D’ÉTAT
In 1964, a coup d’état was staged between 17 and 18 February 1964 by Gabonese military officers who rose against Gabonese President Léon M’ba. Before the coup, Gabon was seen as one of the most politically stable countries in Africa.
The coup resulted from M’ba’s dissolution of the Gabonese legislature on 21 January 1964, and during a takeover with few casualties 150 coup plotters arrested M’ba and a number of his government officials.
Through Radio Libreville, they asked the people of Gabon to remain calm and assured them that the country’s pro-France foreign policy would remain unchanged

Five surgeons perform Kano’s first open brain surgery

Kano witnessed  history and a medical feat, when five neuro-surgeons within 48 hours performed the first open  brain surgery in the state.

The feat was carried out at Muhammadu Buhari Specialist Hospital, Giginyu, Kano, on patient Ali Iliyasu, who had been suffering from a brain ailment in the last 26 years, after an accident.
The leader of the surgeons who conducted the surgery, Shu’aibu Dambatta, a consultant, revealed that “the patient had an 11 months appointment with another different facility before he came to us and we accepted to conduct the open brain surgery on him.”
He added that the team of the surgeons included Dr Atiku, Dr Musa, Dr Hassan and Dr Musbahu, who are all from Kano State. According to him, “This is the first brain surgery done in Kano, in the history of the medical profession in the state. We were contacted within the shortest period of time and we accepted to conduct the surgery. As you can see, the patient is talking to you now, in less than 24 hours after the surgery, you know it is a successful exercise. He goes to rest room on his feet, just within 24 hours after the surgery. We all thank Allah for this all-important breakthrough in this specialist hospital,” Dambatta said.
How ever the patient is from Dala local government, in Kano State. “All members of the team that we participated together in the surgery are also from Kano.” He added that the surgery was conducted free of charge. “His family are only left with the purchase of the prescribed drugs. So we are all happy that we conducted the first open brain surgery in Kano. And it was very successful. Alhamdulillah,” he declared.
While thanking Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, Dambatta said, “This development became possible through the good process followed by the state government in making the management of the hospital to be under Public Private Partnership (PPP), which helps in no small measure to have the state-of-the-art medical equipments that made the dream a reality.”
In his remarks, Ganduje, who expressed joy at outcome of the surgery, said, “We are delighted and very much impressed with this development.
“We are ever thankful to Almighty Allah for making our dream come true. When President Muhammadu Buhari was launching this giant Specialist Hospital, we revealed to the hearing of all that it would not be run solely by government. We wanted to make it under Public Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement where there will be no strike from the staff and the management would tally with the global best practice. This is the result of our people-centred thinking.”
The patient, Iliyasu, while recounting his ordeals, as to the history of the ailment, said: “I had been suffering from this problem for the past 26 years, when I had an accident. Since that time my brain was not the same again.”
He explained that “I and my family suffered a lot by going from one place to another, in search of effective medical attention and intervention. But all to no avail. The last place we went gave me an appointment of 11 months after which a surgery would be conducted on me.”
The patient said he could not sleep soundly after the operation. He lauded the governor for his accomplishment in the state.
His mother and wife, Furera Ali and Sadiya Iliyasu Abubakar, also commended Ganduje for the giant edifice and prayed for his victory and that of President Buhari in the forthcoming elections.
The governor later inspected the work on the recently initiated Kano Cancer Centre, to see the progress of work. The centre, according to him, was first thought of when he visited one of the best world cancer centres in Australia, few weeks back. “From there and then I talked to them, to come to Kano and help us in establishing one,” he said.
